Happiness is a Bird

I have been putting out water bowl for birds for past few months. Some birds have become a regular at that spot now. So the other day, I emptied the pot to clean and started watering the plants in my garden. Then only, a couple of peafowls appeared and checked the empty pot. I felt so sorry for leaving the pot empty. And amazingly, when I tried filling the pot with the pipe, the birds didn't fly away - they just waited very close. That gave me some courage to put out some rice and bird-feed as well. The peafowls were not perturbed by my presence and rather, watched me curiously. As soon as I put the rice out, they came close and started eating. I clicked this picture from my kitchen window and kept watching them for over 15 minutes or so. That was a sheer blissful morning... after all, happiness is a bird!

कोकिले, पर यह तेरा राग

I have been busy... very busy! So busy that I didn't have time to miss myself!! 

Are you asking what kept me busy? Well... nothing. I was looking at the sun... I was caged... but I still kept looking at the sun.

The sun reminded me of you... your smell, your chatter, your softness... I was caged... but the sun of your memory kept me alive! 

I was so busy that I didn't have time to miss myself!! I still missed you!!!

फिर सुबह होगी 

और फिर शाम होगी.

गुलमुहर तुमने हमेशा देखा होगा -

 गहरे सुर्ख रंग में खिला हुआ!

लेकिन एक गुलमुहर ये भी है - 

सुर्ख नहीं, उड़ा-उड़ा सा, टूटा सा... 

खूबसूरत और पाकीज़ा ये कम नहीं, 

लेकिन पूछो खुद से तो पता चले शायद 

कि ये सुर्ख होने के अपने अंजाम तक

क्यूँ नहीं पहुंचा!

कोई फूल खूबसूरत कब होता है? 

जब उसे बगीचे या गुलदान में सजा कर रखा जाए तब? 

क्या वो फूल खूबसूरत नहीं होता, 

जो जंगल में कहीं गुमनाम सा खिला हो?

तुम्हें प्यार करना क्या ज़रूरी है कि 

तुम्हारी अनुमति से ही किया जाए?

वो प्रेम क्या कम पवित्र होगा

 जो जीवन भर तुम्हें समर्पित रहे - 

बिना तुम्हारे प्रयास के, 

बिना तुम्हारे जाने, 

बिना तुम्हें पाने के प्रयास के!

अद्भुत है ना - वो जगह ही ऎसी थी.

जो ऐसी तस्वीरें मिल जाती थीं. 

अब तो वैसा कहाँ कभी कुछ मिलता है.

फूल तात्पर्य-विहीन, और काँटे - 

उनसे तो तुमने खूब काम लिया होगा ना...

ये डहेलिया है - खूबसूरत, रंगीन, घुमावदार, 

और मोहपाश में बाँध लेने वाले - 

बिल्कुल तुम्हारी याद आ जाती है इनसे!

तुम्हे पता है - ये सफ़ेद पत्तियां नहीं फूल हैं. 

और ये सादामिजाज़ी आई भी तो गोआ से. 

अरमानों की ज़मीन से सब ख्वाब ही सादे निकले.

ये भारत के सुदूर प्रान्त - मिजोरम - से हैं. 

वहाँ से और भी पता नहीं क्या-क्या लाया था. 

देखना अब भी तुम्हारे पास शायद कुछ बचा हो. 

मेरे पास तो केवल यही फूल बचा है.

ये अमलतास के झूमर हैं - कुछ ही दिनों में कम्पनी बाग़ इनसे भर जाएगा.

और अगर मैं वहाँ जा पाया तो अपने बचपन में एक डुबकी मार आऊँगा.

ये नयनतारा है. इसको बहुत बढ़ना - कढ़ना था... 

लेकिन अब ये केवल एक फूल का नाम हो कर रह गया है.

ये अनचाहे फूल हैं - विदेश से लाये गए... 

और परदेस में भी अवांछित. 

कितने रिश्ते फूलों जैसे होते हैं 

और 

कितने फूल रिश्तों जैसे, 

है ना.

कल वसन्त का प्रथम दिवस था....
जानती हो ना कि वसन्त वो ऋतु है जिसमें प्रकृति स्वयं का श्रृंगार करती है - पुष्पों से.
सो मैं भी तुमको प्रतिदिन एक पुष्प अर्पित करूंगा.
अब यही थाती है जो तुमको अर्पित करूँ और तुम नकार न सको.
श्रद्धा-सुमन स्वीकार करना तो देवता की मजबूरी होती है ना.

The year closed with a trip to Varanasi. The Ganges is, as always, massive and majestic but the city must be blamed for making a mockery of the might with mightier pollution. Nonetheless, the city is among top tourist destinations in India. The mix of extremes is so common a site that Varanasi will definitely increase your faith in Gods.

Chunaar is a small town close to Varanasi but falls under Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh. It is famous for the Chunaar Gadh Fort, immortalized in the story of Bundela warriors Alha and Udal. I couldn't visit the Chunaar Gadh Fort but found this balcony of Juliet, longing for a Romeo.

Leave a two-hour drive from Mumbai.... the maximum city offers such serene settings in the city itself. You just need to develop an eye for that.

People often crib of Mumbai as an urban jungle... but I found a nice and cozy, albeit small bird sanctuary barely 2 hours drive away from Mumbai. This map was displayed at the beginning of the Karnala Bird Sanctuary in Panvel, Raigad. Thanks to Gunjan, who first drove me to out of bed on a Sunday morning and then all the way to this sanctuary.

Won't you love a job that asks you if you want to go to a hill-station for a week? Don't worry, they happily gave vacations for that and also paid for everything. This is a capture of Naini Lake, clicked from the rope-way connecting Snow View Point to Mall Road, Nainital.

Somewhere in the mad rush of travel during summers, I stole a small trip to Ranganathittu in Mandya district of Karnataka, located somewhere in between Bangalore and Mysore. A dear friend's whole family played a delightful host all the while.

This crocodile was spotted in there, some 10 meters away from our boat in the same lake. For moments, all the horrific crocodile movie scenes played in my head... but I'm still here is a proof of the fact that crocodiles don't give a damn about us!

While cooling my heels for a while in Indore before the next round of travel begins, got a call to come to the city and meet three amazing individuals.

Update as of 2017:

No idea about the gentleman in the middle but have severed contact with the two on sides. 

Reason - found them deeply communal and full of political hatred.

It was my second meeting in 2013 with the mighty and majestic Ganges. Haridwar is the place, where the Ganges enters the plains of Uttar Pradesh - that sight and setting is really divine. We drove back from Mussoorie via Dehradoon and stopped in Haridwar for a while. 

Three days later, the mighty Ganges came even more heavily than the usual stream and washed away the entire landscape we admired on our way back. That incident is now known as The Uttarakhand Tragedy of 2013. Nature's forces are life-giver and life-taker at will. Our respect for them increased manifold that day.

About time I should catch a personal vacation break... a much awaited break took us to Mussoorie - known as the queen of mountains, rightly so.

This summer, it was a mad rush to visit random places at short notices. Goa also got added at the last minute, for a friend wanted me for a small role at the First Pan-IIM Conference.

I am lost about where did I go to next, as I've visited over 20 places in 2013 (read about that here).
So, here is to one of my most exhilarating moments of 2013 - watching one of my favorite artists, Birjoo Maharaj, performing one of my favorite dance forms, Kathak, at a SPIC-MACAY concert at IIM Calcutta in one of my favorite cities, Kolkata.

Next on our itinerary was Prayaag. Despite ongoing Maha Kumbh, Triveni was serene and beautiful in bone-chilling winter nights.

The early February thunderstorms and rains made Lucknow even colder than normal. Yet, four of us decided to drive to (?? - wait till the next pic). We stopped en-route in Pratap Garh, where I clicked this mustard flower, while others met their 'urges'.

So the first place I flew to was the good old Lucknow and from the airport, I directly went to the place featured below for a good old old-fashioned picnic with the whole family :) :) :)
